Meet Lyssa and Shelley!

What’s the best thing about 4Cats?
L: Observing and guiding children in the creative process. Its my joy.
S: Getting to know the kids and the families. And spending everyday in such a positive and inspirational environment.
How did you guys decided to go into business together?
Both: We have known each other for years, have a lot of fun together and are practically family. It was a great fit.
What are your education and work backgrounds?
L: BFA in Photography and Media Arts, minor in fashion from NSCADU in Halifax. I did mostly freelance work until I found 4Cats.
S: BA in Economics at UBC and a banking background. You can call me the left brain of the studio.
What’s it like to work with your friend?
L: Yes! It’s great to have a business partner that I trust undoubtedly. It makes decision making easy. I’m also sure that the dynamic we create in the studio together is a huge addition to the fun-factor of our classes. We’re always singing, joking and laughing together.
S: So much fun! I would absolutely recommend working with friends. The laughing, joking and singing creates the best most fun work environment ever!
What has been your favourite artist session so far? And why?
L: I really loved the Klimt session. He’s my favourite artist!
S: Andy Warhol. He was such a character and the stories are hilarious. Also, silk-screening is an amazing and different process.
What is your favourite birthday party to host? And why?
L: Star Force. I have a awesome Yoda Voice!
S: Splatter. This is definitely a don’t-try-this-at-home type of party. The look on the kids’ faces when they see our splatter room is priceless.
What’s your favourite part of your working day?
L: Seeing what the kids come up with. Their uninhibited approach to art is inspirational.
S: Teaching the classes and getting to know the kids, their stories are fun to listen to. Also, hanging out with Lyssa, we have a lot of fun when we are together.
What is your favourite 4Cats art fact?
L: Tamara de Lempicka snagged her future husband by dressing up as a goose-girl and parading herself around a party with two geese!
S: Andy Warhol said “there is magic in everything”. Great belief Andy!
What’s been the biggest thing you’ve learned about yourselves since you opened 4Cats Steveston?
L: Success is more rewarding when you have someone to high-five!
S: Working hard does not feel like working hard when you are having so much fun!
