Meet 4Cats Owner Laurinla!
What’s your educational background?
I am a Chartered Accountant with the heart of an artist! I’ve always been inspired to paint and create!
Why 4Cats?
Did someone say “paint splatter room”? How much more fun can it get? The classes also allow children to learn about artists and be inspired to paint their famous paintings. And the parties are awesome!
How did you hear about 4Cats?
I attended a Pollock party! I was hooked after that.
What is your favourite colour?
Bright yellow. It’s so sunny and happy. We painted our house a bright yellow and passersby would do a double take because of it’s brightness!
Who is your favourite artist and why?
Georgia O’Keeffe because of her big bold coloured flowers and Tamara De Lempicka because of her ability to portray independent, confident women.
What is your favourite art medium, and why?
Paint. Paint allows you to create big and grand and colourful artwork. You can blend with it and make it thinner or thicker to add texture.
Any other interesting facts we should know about you?
I was reminded of my love for art – performance and visual, only after having my 2 daughters. Watching them at their recitals and admiring their beautiful creations they bring home makes me all warm and fuzzy inside. I truly believe that we all need art in our lives ’cause art makes the world a more fulfilling place to be!
Meet 4Cats Curator Anna Carruth!
What’s your background?
I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Emily Carr University, and am currently working on my Bachelor of Education at Simon Fraser University.
Why 4Cats?
Because the only thing I love more than art is kids. And I’ve always wanted to be King of the Wild Things. Let the rumpus start!
What is your favourite colour?
Bright red and rainbow!
Who is your favourite artist and why?
Alphonse Mucha because I cannot help falling in love with both Art Nouveau and the Arts and Crafts movement.
What is your favourite art medium, and why?
I have lots of favourites. painting, sculpture, film, but ceramic is my favourite medium to use because tactile medium, you really have to get immersed in the material.
Meet 4Cats Curator Natalie Sorenson!
What’s your educational background?
I have a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Fine Art. I went to art school in Memphis, Tennessee and Vancouver.
Why 4Cats?
I like the way that 4Cats integrates art history into the projects that kids work on. I think it is important that kids learn about traditions in art-making and this is a fun way to do that!
What is your favourite colour?
It really depends on what is wearing that colour. I like bright orange for sweaters and socks, but not for cars or houses.
Favourite art quote?
“Artists are better at finding a way to kill their time.”
- John Baldessari
Who is your favourite artist and why?
I really like the videos Guy Ben-Ner made with his kids as a stay-at-home dad. They’re full of slap-stick moments and inventive stage props.
What is your favourite art medium, and why?
It depends on what I am working on. A project idea might work better as a video, as a series of watercolours or as a sculpture.
Meet 4Cats Curator Rebecca Chinn!

What’s your background?
BA (honours) in Fine Art from Edinburgh College of Art, Scotland.
Why 4Cats?
Art + kids… I can’t think of a better job! I love to be around kids and to hear their funny stories – getting a glimpse into what is going on in their minds. It is very rewarding to be a part of their creative process and to help enable them to express how the world is through their eyes.
What is your favourite colour and why??
Blue, blue blue! Turquoise blue, sky blue…. any kind of blue. I have been known as Beccablue.
Who is your favourite artist and why?
I have always liked Edgar Degas’ work. He was a true draughtsman. I admire his ability to know exactly how much to put in and what to leave out of his paintings. I like his realist detailed depictions but enjoy most his sketchy spontaneous under-worked studies capturing a fleeting moment.
What is your favourite art medium, and why?
Hmm lets say mixed media!…. charcoal, chalk pastels, inks, paints and pencil. I like a mixture as it creates a variety of types of marks – smudges, splatters, sharp lines, texture etc. Photography and the effects created from liquid light printing is also a favourite… printing photos onto objects/glass/wood produces an interesting finish.
So…any other interesting facts we should know about you?
I play the drums and I sometimes make artwork by drumming out a rhythm with my brushes in response to some music. It’s great fun.. and i can practise my drumming at the same time as creating a visual masterpiece!
